The Engineering for Change (E4C) Fellowship is a workforce development program at the intersection of technology and social impact, serving to activate and empower early-career engineers, architects, scientists and technical professionals worldwide to solve local and global challenges and advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Sponsored by mission-aligned organizations, E4C Fellows expand their understanding of the sector through participation in E4C’s Impact Projects, performing research or design work for social impact. Targeted Learning Modules deepen their knowledge in the space, while networking with the experts and rising engineers through the E4C community and E4C’s Fellow Alumni Network advances their career path. The E4C Fellowship is a part-time and remote commitment that lasts five (5) months, with Summer (May to September) and Winter (November-March) cohorts. Fellows receive a stipend and are expected to commit 20-25 hours per week with flexible schedules. This webpage details impact projects falling within the 2022 E4C Winter Fellowship. To express your interest in joining the E4C Fellowship program, please fill out the application form link(s) directly below.
NOTE: The VDI project specifically will last from January 2023 to April 2023 requiring 20 hours per week with flexible schedules. For more information on the requirements, please see the project icon below and review the VDI Impact Project Fellowship brochure.

Project Description This research aims to explore motivating factors around climate action towards meeting the 1.5 degree warming target identified in the Paris Agreement within the contexts of Germany and the United States. In particular, this investigation will focus on how the habitat and transport sectors are utilizing digital technologies to mitigate and/or eliminate carbon emissions. Four fellows, two from Germany and two from the United States, will explore how digitalization is enabling industry climate strategies and the circular economy for the built environment, sustainable mobility, and smart cities through desk research and expert interviews. The final report will include a summary of the findings, insights on key trends, and recommendations for skills needed to advance decarbonization efforts in these sectors.
