Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor Positions
The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division (IGSD) and First Year Seminar Program jointly seek three full-time Teaching Faculty at the Assistant level. Two of these positions will serve in the IGSD’s Global Program and one will be split between the First Year Program and IGSD. All positions are continuing, non-tenure track, 9-month appointments.
For the Global Program, we seek faculty whose teaching, advising, and scholarly expertise will support WPI’s undergraduate society-technology project requirement. Over half of WPI students complete at least one project away from campus, typically a nine-credit-hour project that confronts an open-ended problem at the interface between society and technology. Project topics are proposed by agencies and organizations in the US and around the world, and typically involve issues such as environment and energy, appropriate technology, education, community and/or sustainable development.
Individuals with a PhD in International Studies or Development, Anthropology, Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Education, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, or a related field with interest and experience in Latin America and/or China/East Asia will receive preference.
The successful candidate will contribute intellectually and through teaching to an academic program focused on critical thinking, persuasive writing, and cross-cultural learning. Candidates must be comfortable with collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching qualitative social science research methods (or applying them through scientific research), and in conducting and guiding applied, field-based research.
Experience with corporate or public sector decision making, international development projects, experiential or project based learning, or with cross-cultural training (such as the Peace Corps) would also be valuable, as are foreign language skills.
Individuals for the IGSD positions would prepare students for their research, advise student projects at a WPI project center for one or two 8-week terms per year, and over time take over leadership in directing a project center.
The successful candidate for the IGSD/First Year position will have the above qualifications, but will spend one semester working in WPI’s First Year program, the Great Problems Seminars, with commensurate reduction in IGSD responsibilities. The Great Problems Seminars program is an innovative and nationally recognized program that combines interdisciplinary team teaching with project-based learning to explore current challenges at the nexus of science, technology and society. Current course topics include water, food, health care, energy and sustainable development. Candidates with qualitative methods and a science background preferred.
