Cookstove Laboratory Researcher

Burn Design Lab, headquartered on Vashon Island, WA is offering an entry level position to a clear
thinking, well-organized, science or engineering graduate, who is ready to learn the details and
master the challenges associated with determining the performance characteristics of improved
cookstoves and materials. We are looking for someone with high integrity, with good communication
skills, with a degree in science or engineering who has an interest in testing, research, data analysis,
and organization effectiveness. Burn Design Lab will provide a modest salary for the selected
candidate.
Burn Design Lab is a U.S. based and internationally focused non-profit organization dedicated to the
improvement of lives and the environment in the developing world through research, design, and
development of outstanding cookstoves and fuels.
The successful candidate will be engaged in most or all of the following:
– Managing the cookstove laboratory and cookstove testing program.
– Performance, combustion, safety, durability, and emissions testing of cookstoves
– Presenting results to the team, including those overseas via net-meeting
– Biomass fuel and cookstove materials testing.
– Providing input to stove designs based on observations and testing results
– Documentation and improvement of testing methods and protocols
– Assuring regular & accurate calibration of laboratory equipment
– Making improvements to laboratory systems & equipment
– Testing cookstove materials – sheet metal & ceramics.
– International travel and field testing of cookstoves and related equipment.
– Training interns and others in laboratory operations.
– Receiving and shipping cookstove factory supplies & equipment.
Experience
Applicants should have the following experience and aptitudes:
– Completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in science or engineering
– Collecting, organizing, & analyzing data.
– Proficiency with Excel, PPT, and Word.
– Significant laboratory & report writing experience
– Strong organization skills and consistent attention to detail
– Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Start Date & Duration
This position is 12+ months in duration, beginning in September or October 2022.
Compensation
$40,000+/year depending upon qualifications
