Manufacturing Design Internship

In the far southern part of Mali, myAgro clients grow rice on seasonally flooded, swampy plots of land. Many farmers plant by broadcasting, but the uneven distribution of seeds and fertilizer leads to low yields. Although rice planters have been developed in other countries to plant in evenly spaced rows, they are expensive and uncommon in southern Mali, and not optimized for the local conditions. Working with myAgro’s Agricultural Innovations team, you will adapt a rice planter for use in southern Mali, incorporate feedback from local rice farmers, and prepare a manufacturing package of 3D models and drawings.

About this Internship Project

For this internship, you will gain hands-on, real-world experience by:

Demonstrating existing rice planters and working with local farmers to understand their limitations and areas for improvement (myAgro field agents will facilitate this with you).
Modeling improvements to planter design to better match farmer needs and agricultural performance
Commissioning example pieces of new planter designs from local fabricants
Testing prototypes with agricultural team and with farmers
Proposing a final design for rice planter, documented with 3D model and 2D drawings for manufacturing
Qualifications, Skills & Experience


Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university studying Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Product Design, Engineering or related field
Enrollment in the Autodesk Student Expert program prior to the internship commencing. You do not need to be signed up as an Autodesk Student Expert before applying, but you must be eligible, and you must register before beginning the internship

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

Fluency in Autodesk Inventor, Fusion or other Autodesk products for 3D modeling
Proficiency in French is a strong asset, but not required
Ready to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including field support agents, agricultural research experts and the rice trials team
Excellent creative problem-solving skills and the tenacity and inventiveness to work in a low-resource environment
Experience in one or more of the following
Design for manufacturing
FEA analysis
Design for affordability / low-cost design
