Project Overview
Geothermal energy is an underutilized yet promising clean energy pathway capable of providing reliable baseload power and low-carbon heat for industrial, commercial, and community applications. Advances in deep drilling, subsurface engineering, materials, and digital monitoring, many of which originated in the oil and gas sector, are improving the technical and economic viability of geothermal systems, including enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Despite this progress, geothermal deployment continues to be constrained by market challenges centered around technical, regulatory, business, and workforce concerns.
There is a need to develop the first Geothermal Strategic Framework. A framework identifies leading market challenges, associated industry opportunities, and areas where ASME can have the greatest impact and broader industry application of a technology domain. A framework serves as a practical, decision-oriented tool to guide future ASME products, engagements, and offerings around geothermal energy.Â
With geothermal energy being a technology that aligns under ASMEâs Climate Action Pillar of Clean and Affordable Energy, this project aims to get an E4C Senior Fellow’s support to identify the first elements of a strategic framework. Through research and analysis, the top market challenges will be determined, referenced, and listed. Then through the same process of research and analysis the top industry opportunities that could overcome or mitigate a listed market challenge will be determined, referenced, and itemized in the framework. Â
