About DERRICK
I am a Ugandan Civil/Structural Engineer with over 10 years of experience in structural design, construction supervision, and humanitarian engineering across East and Central Africa. I have worked on complex projects including major hospital developments and high-rise buildings, while also serving with Engineering Ministries International and local NGOs to support vulnerable communities in Tanzania, Kenya, DRC Congo, and Sudan. I have engaged with RedR UK and DisasterReady for specialized training in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and humanitarian response, and I genuinely enjoy development-focused engineering work—even when serving in volunteer capacities. My technical background is grounded in concrete and steel design using Eurocodes and British Standards, and I am currently pursuing an MSc in Civil Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University. I am passionate about humanitarian and development engineering, driven by a desire to do meaningful work that goes beyond financial gain, and I look forward to growing as a researcher and innovator in sustainable structural solutions that strengthen vulnerable communities.

DERRICK In 3 Questions
I love to see engineering bring real solutions to vulnerable people or people facing real life challenges such as disasters. My passion is moved when I know what am doing is for the greater good of humanity hence my interest in development and humanitarian engineering.
From a structural engineering perspective, they would include; lower carbon material to replace traditional construction materials, collaborative technologies such as smart building technologies to enable effective energy use, structural design layouts that allow for easy modification of building use over the year, structures that have just about the right redundancy to ensure they can take some extra loads when use changes yet not excessive redundancy that would be wasteful.
My real-life superpower is working in a cross-cultural and cross-discipline team to find solutions to intense human needs. I enjoy and thrive and fighting major issues with fellow engineers. I have worked on projects across the entire East Africa and worked on engineering teams with members from across the globe both in commercial and NGO setting. Still, the one super power I can highlight is the ability to break down large complex challenges to smaller tasks, and work with my team to tackle step by step each challenge. My biggest fulfillment comes from knowing that my structural engineering expertise has been a part of building humanity not just for profit.
