About Ralph Carlo Evidente

Currently, I am a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Joint Doctoral Fellow in a Horizon Europe SusMatEner Project (2025-2028) at Université Grenoble Alpes and Université catholique de Louvain. My research—partnered with BeDimensional (Italy)—focuses on advanced synthesis and characterization of carbonitride MXenes for electrochemical storage and photovoltaic applications, integrating materials-by-design, DFT/machine learning modeling, and industry-driven proof-of-concept development. I am an Erasmus Mundus alumnus (2022 cohort), graduating magna cum laude with an International Joint MSc in Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management, jointly conferred by Ghent University, Uppsala University, and TU Bergakademie Freiberg, in collaboration with the EIT RawMaterials Academy. My academic training spans georesource exploration, sustainable extraction, circular economy strategies, and advanced materials recovery. I hold a European Specializing Master’s diploma from Politecnico di Milano in Nuclear Fuel Cycle Monitoring, Nuclear Safeguards, and Non-Proliferation, awarded as an ENEN full scholar. Earlier in my career, I contributed to a BK21-funded nuclear engineering project in South Korea, focusing on nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, and CFD-based modeling for APR1400 and SMR systems. I earned my BSc in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from Mapúa University and MSc in Nuclear Engineering from POSTECH. In 2019, I took teaching and research positions on bioenergy conversion and techno-economic assessments in Mapua University. In 2025, I worked at K1-MET GmbH (Austria), developing bioelectrochemical and chemical precipitation systems for struvite recovery from sewage sludge ash. During my Erasmus mobility, I participated in several international R&D projects: (1) Helmholtz Centers (HZDR, HZB) – battery recycling, oxyhydroxide–MXene electrocatalysts, and XPEEM characterization of transition metal dichalcogenides. (2) CNR-ISMN (Italy) & INEMET@TUBAF (Germany) – geopolymer development and membrane-based hydrometallurgical separation. (3) JRC Karlsruhe & Ispra (European Commission) – nuclear 3S (Safety, Security, Safeguards) policy design for EU candidate and neighboring countries. I am passionate about advancing sustainable innovation in raw materials, energy, and circular systems—bridging science, engineering, and policy to deliver tangible impact, especially in developing regions.

I’m inspired by the way science and engineering can transform challenges into solutions — whether it’s recovering critical metals from waste, designing bioelectrochemical systems to clean water, or developing new materials for green energy. Seeing ideas move from lab experiments to real-life impact fires me up every day. I believe we can build a sustainable, low-carbon world — and I want to be part of the team making it happen.

Absolutely — energy storage and conversion are game-changers! From batteries that store solar and wind power for when the sun doesn’t shine, to fuel cells, electrolyzers, and advanced hydrogen systems — these technologies keep clean energy flowing reliably. They’re the bridge between renewable energy and real-world use, powering everything from electric cars to green industries. Without smart ways to store and convert energy, sustainability can’t scale. :)

I’d say it’s my ability to spread positivity! Whether I’m tackling tough research challenges, working in diverse teams, or connecting with people worldwide, I bring optimism and energy to keep moving forward. Positivity turns obstacles into opportunities — and makes even the biggest sustainability goals feel possible.
