Design and Optimization of Critical Metal Recovery Technology

A Design for Good project supporting Nth Cycle in optimizing its electrolytic cell models for the recovery of critical metals. Sponsored by the Autodesk Foundation.

Project Overview

Project Description

Nth Cycle is an industry leader in critical metal refining, using patented electro-extraction technology to recover critical metals from end-of-life batteries, scrap metal and mined ore. Nth Cycle’s Oyster electro-extraction system provides a cleaner alternative (powered by electricity, not fossil fuels) to traditional smelting and chemical leaching for recovering critical metals like nickel, cobalt, and manganese from used batteries and other industrial wastes. These metals are essential for building electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.

For this project, Nth Cycle is seeking a fellow to support in the design optimization of its patented electrolytic cells at the core of its Oyster system. The fellow will provide support with mechanical design, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), brainstorming concepts, and optimization of different Nth Cycle cell models (with different metals refining). This project will focus on 3D CAD mechanical design of the cell, along with computer simulations such as FEA/CFD. The fellow will work closely with the subject matter expert and other engineers at Nth Cycle.

Impact

Nth Cycle is developing technology to recycle critical metals for battery production to make the electric vehicle & energy storage supply chain more sustainable. Any design improvements that reduce the Nth Cycle cell’s energy consumption, carbon footprint, or waste will help to build a cleaner, more sustainable future. This project will add valuable support to the team working on cell optimization, speeding up the design process, and adding capacity to optimize an increased number of cells. This work will offer the fellow an opportunity to work on the product design of the electrolytic cell and metal refining.
