Optimization of Structural System for Learning and Youth Innovation Center

A Design for Good project supporting Wokober in improving the structural system suitable for a low-resource, rural context in Uganda.

Structural System Optimization of Learning and Youth Innovation Center

Project Description

Wokober is seeking engineering support to advance the Wokober Innovation Academy, a sustainability-driven learning and innovation center currently at the schematic design stage and recently submitted to the Holcim Foundation Global Award for Sustainable Construction. The Academy will serve as a regional hub for hands-on STEAM learning and youth innovation in Northern Uganda, forming a critical pillar of our mission to nurture a generation of African innovators and problem-solvers.

The proposed E4C Impact Project will focus on structural system optimization. An early-career structural engineer will work with Wokober’s architectural team to:

  • Review the existing schematic design and propose an optimized structural system suitable for a low-resource, rural context.
  • Conduct basic load assessments (wind, seismic, soil/foundation considerations).
  • Explore low-carbon structural alternatives (e.g., optimized reinforced concrete, engineered timber, or hybrid systems).
  • Produce a simplified structural model using tools such as Revit, ETABS, Robot, or Rhino/Grasshopper.
  • Recommend the most efficient, buildable, and sustainable structural strategy for detailed design.

Impact

These engineering contributions will significantly improve the building’s sustainability performance and ensure technical robustness. This support accelerates Wokober’s goal of establishing a flagship education and innovation facility that demonstrates affordable, climate-responsive, and resilient design, supporting thousands of learners in underserved communities and strengthening locally led innovation ecosystems in Uganda.
