Competitive Landscape

Manufacturing/Building Method

The Wisdom Stove M2 is manufactured by Wisdom Innovations. The cookstove is made with locally available materials and manufactured by a locally trained workforce in North Kinangop, Kenya. All of the stoves components are manually manufactured, including the outer cylinder, fuel cylinder, concentrator lid, riser and handles. Most of the M2 components are constructed with mild, galvanized or stainless steel metal sheets except the ceramic insert.

Design Specifications

The Wisdom Stove M2 is a Top-lift updraft gasifier and it's design is primarily composed of two concentric cylindrical containers. The inner container is the fuel cylinder and has holes that function as primary air inlets to gasify the fuel, while the outer container serves as a structural component and has another set of holes that function as secondary air inlets to burn the fuel gas. The M2 is a natural draft cookstove, primary and secondary air required for combustion are circulated naturally. The design also includes a ceramic insert to retain heat. Specifications: Maximum Pot Capacity: 15 L Dimensions (l/w/h): 280/280/430 mm

Manufacturer Specified Performance Parameters

Designers specified performance targets include cooking and production of charcoal simultaneously, reduction of harmful smoke, environmental conservation awareness and cost savings in fuel consumption.

Vetted Performance Status

The Department of Chemistry Laboratories from the University of Nairobi conducted the approved simulation of the cooking process, the Water Boiling Tests (WBT). The tests showed average values for the measures of:

  • How efficiently a stove uses fuel to heat water in a cooking pot.
  • Quantity of emissions produced while cooking.
The Partnership on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Renewables (wPOWER), under their “Where are the women in the energy sector” series, developed a case study on a six-month project undertaken by Wisdom Innovations. wPOWER stated the key findings on Wisdom Innovation’s performance as:
  • Women play a critical role as key drivers in the household clean energy supply chain.
  • Recruitment of women as local sales and customer service agents provides insight into the local dynamics of the communities they work in.
  • Working with established women’s networks promotes sustainable adoption of clean energy technologies.
  • Providing access to affordable finance is essential in ensuring clean cooking solutions are made available to low-income households.

Safety

The safety concerns associated with the usage of biomass burning cookstoves are primarily related with carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide emissions. Another significant safety concern is domestic accidents such as accidental burning or spill-overs.

Complementary Technical Systems

None.
