Nippon Basic Co. Ltd.
CycloClean is a point-of-use, bicycle-driven water purification system that relies on a purifying system comprised of four filters attached to the rear seat of the bicycle. The included bicycle enables users to get to areas inaccessible by larger vehicles in cases of disaster/emergency as well as to pedal the pump.
Initially Japan, with a goal to reach other Asian countries including India, Myanmar, Thailand and Bangladesh.
There is a prototype called the Aquaduct but seemingly no other cycle powered water filters on the market.
Small batch production for over a decade.
IP Protected Inventions regarding Cycloclean: are protected under
Japanese Patent No. 3575442, Chinese Patent No. 173454, Taiwan Patent No. 159795 and The U. S. Patent 6641729
The unit can be ordered from the manufacturer directly.
How often/when should maintenance be performed?
CycloClean bicycle is comprised of a bicycle that enables users to get to areas inaccessible by larger vehicles and to pedal the pump. The purification system is made of four (4) filters, a pre-filter and three (3) filters to purify water for drinking – 1 microfiltation membrane filter, 1 hybrid carbon filter and 1 primary filter. Cycloclean filters dirt, bacteria and smell from the raw water (rainwater, river or lake). The system can purify 6L of raw water in one minute. Serving up to 150 people in an hour.
Technical support is provided by Nippon Basic CO. Ltd.
Parts are not sold seperately.
Cycloclean can produce 6 liters of drinking water per minute, 3 times amount of daily drinking water for a single person per day. Cycloclean removes bacteria, dirt, and green matter.
UNIDO states that a unit of this technology can produce 5 liters of clean drinking water per minute from raw water. This device unit is fixed at the rear seat of a custom-made bicycle. Users can produce clean water by only working the pedals. Raw water used as input can be very dirty, but should not be rotten or gassy. Sea-water is not applicable.
Sea water is not appropriate to be used as a water supply.
BICYCLE POWERED WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM- B.S. THESIS not peer reviewed
Field tests and laboratory analysis of filtered water.
If the bike can be assembled in Bangladesh and then fitted with the water purification filters, the price will drop down by approximately half of its current price.
